In every culture there have been constant struggles against, war, or new ideas, though it was not establish back them why these were human obsessions, we now see them as an addiction to winning. In fact some of these people had to make a place in history that wouldn’t be erased by the next maniac in power. Thus investing all their resources into building monuments to their deities or what ever they felt important, including themselves.
